Activity 1

Non-verbal - students explore the meaning inferred in the pictures and the text.

Deconstruct / Reconstruct - students begin by exploring the whole text, and then explore individual images and phrases in order to come to a fuller understanding of the text.
Students deconstruct the picture book The Rabbits by John Marsden. This might begin with a discussion of what they know about rabbits and about colonisation. They will explore the author's purpose and how it is achieved through words and pictures.

Activity 2

Non-verbal - students use their whole bodies (gesture, mime etc.) to retell a story.

Community links - students learn how colonisation impacted their own area and return knowledge to the community through a performance.
Students research or listen to the story of Captain Arthur Phillip and Woollarawarre Bennelong.
Students re-enact the spearing of Captain Arthur Phillip at Manly Cove (this should take place at Manly Cove, for an audience of parents and caregivers, if possible).
