Introduce our school.
Manly's Aboriginal history.
Manly is the home of the Guringai People.
In 1788, Captain Arthur Phillip described the Aboriginal people he met around the Manly area as "Manly". This is how the suburb got its name. Curby, P. (2001). Seven Miles from Sydney: A history of Manly. Manly Council, sydney.
In 1790, Captain Arthur Phillip was speared by an Aboriginal man at Manly Cove. Manly Cove is also the site of the abduction of Woollarawarre Bennelong.
Further information about Manly's history and its historic sites can be found on the Aboriginal Heritage website and Manly Council website (see the local contacts page).
Tour of our website and details of activites.

Cultural Competency
We will introduce teachers to a number of areas they need to consider when teaching students about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples' cultures and histories.

Country
We are using Aboriginal voices to talk about Country. This includes quotes, poetry and artworks. The poems and artworks could be used in student activities, particularly in English and Art.

Activities
Our first activity is an excursion to the Australian Museum. This will then lead into activities around Dreaming stories (English), seasonal calendars (Science), first contacts and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples' understandings of Country (History) and custodial responsibility (Geography).
Give teachers a book each and give them 5-10 minutes to look through the book and think of one activity they could do with it.
